DIY Shabby Decorator Phone Lamp

Hey guys – today’s blog – DIY Shabby Decorator Phone Lamp is made from left over pieces from our decorator bin.  A few years back when we sold our other house, I had staged rooms to help the selling process go fast (it worked – sold that puppy after 1 day on the market 😉 – Never pass up staging).  Any ways, back to our DIY Shabby Decorator Phone Lamp – I had this awesome old piece that looked like an old time phone sitting on the piano in the formal Living Room.  Once we moved I tossed it into the decor bin never to be seen again until this weekend when I dug that puppy out and freed it from storage.  Remember the other great project that came from here – our Clock Table.  That’s why I keep it all.

I noticed when moving it the bottom was hollow.  As I kept digging, I found an old lamp I was not using any longer and put the two together and bam – a new DIY Shabby Decorator Phone Lamp was born – Isn’t she cute!!

It was not a hard process and took a couple hours to construct.  I used my Ryboi 18V driver and a set of Ryobi drill bits all purchased from The Home Depot and registered on Ryobi Nation.  That’s right I register every tool, I am one of those people – but you know this because I have a storage area for my unused decor right! 🙂  Look any shade fits her (both were purchased from Tuesday Morning and the finial – the feather reminds me of an ink pen and every phone needs a pen ;-).

Here’s what we did to make this super DIY Shabby Decorator Phone Lamp come to life.

First we deconstructed the old lamp and kept only the pieces we needed for this project (the rest of the lamp parts are sure to become something else.)

Next we drilled a ½” hole in the top of the decorator phone.  To ensure we didn’t harm the thin metal phone top, we used several successive drill sizes, finally ending with ½”, the diameter of our lamp rod.

We did a dry fit of the lamp pieces to make sure everything fit as planned.  To keep the lamp rod secure and upright we fabricated an doweled anchor that would fit under the phone base.  Using a 1½” square piece of scrap that was 4.5” in length, we drilled a ½” hole that was slightly off center.  The lamp rod fits through this anchor and is fastened to the lamp rod.  After a few turns of the nut, the rod was secure and upright.  Now I think even Bob Vila of Bob Vila Nation would be proud of this project :-).

After the lamp pieces were reassembled we prepared to rerun the lamp wire through the lamp rod, which was the trickiest part of the whole project.

To make this process easier, we took a coat hanger and tapped string to one end.  We pushed the coat hanger through the lamp rod.  Once the coat hanger was pushed through the lamp road, we tied the string to the end of the lamp wire and used a combination pushing the lamp wire and pulling the string to gently move the lamp wire back through the lamp rod.  Don’t pull to hard, or the string will pull free and you have to start over.

The final step was to reconnect the lamp socket and secure with the plastic outer cap.  Once the DIY Shabby Decorator Phone Lamp was reassembled we placed a light bulb and viola, let there be light!

It looked perfect.  For a few hours, some left over pieces from our decorator bin and zero additional cost, we have an incredibly and one of a kind DIY Shabby Decorator Phone Lamp.  In fact, I tried to find something similar online and nothing came up.  PS- The little read book – written by my grandmother Lily Bennett – all her original poems in one great book. 🙂
