DIY Storage and Bench from old Dresser

DIY Storage Bench from old Dresser

Would you make a DIY storage bench from old dresser if you could have both extra seating and the storage?  We are in the middle of a conversion folks! So happy to be back and build a project everyone! Arm is feeling better  I thank you all for your warm wishes to get well fast – see it worked – so even though it snowed today, I am taking advantage of feeling good and whipping out a project inside the house today –  DIY storage bench from old dresser.

Thrift Store Furniture Makeover

From the moment I found this dresser, I knew it was destine to be part of our villa.  Look at the fab lines this baby has – You can’t get furniture like this any more.  This is Sligh Furniture made for John A Colby and Sons out of Chicago (check out the history links to the piece and you will see why I could not part with it).

We are prepping for upgrades to our living/dining/kitchen combo inside our villa.  Hubby, and daughter helped me out by finishing the colors on the walls – so I could set up my design boards for colors of the next few projects on our list for the next few months. These little boards are the road map that helps you get a room to its finished state, allowing you to enjoy every feature inside it.  The fabrics are from Hancock Fabrics, tile back-splash is from Home Depot, wood flooring will be from Boardwalk Hardwood Floors, and counters are open for bid with the first bid coming in from Aphrodite Granite – Most are local small businesses here in St Louis.

While prepping the color boards and choosing all my fabrics, I looked over at an old sleigh dresser I painted into Valspar Man Cave Grey from Lowe’s and AS Old White a couple months ago.  I feel in love with this piece because it’s awesome storage, but after looking closer, I will now turn this piece into something functional a DIY storage bench from old dresser for our living needs was the perfect project to tackle in this cold.

This one piece of furniture will act as room divider between living and dining, providing seating for our living room and storage for all those extra place settings I use on a nightly bases and want in our dining room.  Yes readers, I am Linda and I have a dishware collection problem – but what a great problem to have 😉

Over the next few days I will show you how we will take this one dresser and make it all we need to enhance our living and storage space, and make our life better living in a smaller space! So stay tuned as we go through the process over a couple days – with the arm issue, I will be taking this one slow so I hope the three day post on this piece will not drive anyone crazy – because I value all my readers and following bloggers, so thank you all for the patience.

DIY Storage and Bench from old Dresser

Well, I am off to get to work on our new DIY storage bench from old dresser!  Keep warm everyone (we are at -3 with the wind in St Louis today – I know that its worse in other places, but for St Louis – this is COLD, which is why  I am working inside today).

The Villa Goes Shades of Gray

Happy Sunday everyone! We are going gaga over at Hello I Live Here for Shades of Gray. We have started the process to change our rooms to this color and the furniture will not be far behind. (No worries I recruited hubby to do my shades of gray painting – so I am following doctors orders 😉 He’s awesome to help a girl out).

Shades of Gray

I know, we have only been here a year, however the gold colors for us are no longer working as we are working hard to change our small villa to that homey feel through a new color and furnishings we have found or build to fit the space we live, including a cooler paint tones of shades of gray.

Shades of Gray

Various shades of gray are neutral, balanced colors, and in cool tones you can go as conservative in decor, or turn around and evoke strong finishes with shades of gray that will totally support your decor loves.  Shades of gray are those moody type of sophisticated colors that just get along with others.

Paint colors

Our visions boards are going wild since completing the Master Bathroom Makeover Series with all the great shades of gray and a few pops of colors into each room.  If you missed the the posts, you can click here to read the posts and see what we have changed so far to date.

Updating a Bathroom Vanity

DIY Tile Project

Board and Batten Wainscoting

With all the shades of gray peaking at us from the master bathroom, we moved from the into the master bedroom taking out all the old gold colors, painting all the walls the lighter gray, and the accent walls into the darker gray from Pantone String by Valspar from Lowe’s, and Behr Collonade Gray for the dark walls from Home Depot. This is the result so far 🙂  and We are loving it!!!!

Shades of Gray

See, from gold to gray – it’s a great change for us! But know this is the start – we are not done yet as we now plan the build in book/closets, new bench seating and upgrade the bed platform.

Shades of Gray

It’s true – the DIY Decorating Ripple Effect has taken hold, so we know this train will not be stopping anytime soon!

Shades of Gray

Stop by tomorrow – hubby will be done painting the combo room walls of the kitchen, dining, and living room – and I will be busy making my next inspiration boards for these three rooms and what we will be adding to them.  Until next post have an awesome Sunday everyone!!!

Coffee Tables

Coffee Tables

Coffee Tables – Love Them or Hate Them?

Why is it we are all so fascinated with Coffee Tables?

Coffee Tables

New Life from Old Trunk

Coffee Tables can make or break a room with its style of long or short, modern or ornate, as this stumpy table is designed to catch our attention.  These little tables have a big job in our homes as they work hard to entice families to gather around it, hold our drinks and our great reading materials/trinkets.  Homes around the world are filled with these fascinating little tables that bring big style to life in front of any sofa available.  The two pieces together are like Fred and Ginger dancing their way into your living space.  It is the one piece of furniture that remakes itself year after year, style after style, and can hold or store just about anything.  That one piece of furniture we always invite to stay – like our coffee table turned ottoman.

Coffee TableThere are many choices and styles, the Victorian Era, Anglo-Japanese style, Louis XVI style coffee tables and Georgian style coffee tables.  It used to be wood was the only choice for a long time for these low-slung tables and could be found in any shape or style your wanted, and the more ornate and heavy the more we fell in love with the table.  These lovely wood framed tables were found all the way back to renaissance days, and still invite your guest by being the show piece of your living space.

Coffee Table

Today’s trends bring to light more modern, wood, glass/metal choices.  We are also taking the time to make special coffee tables that represent our past loves out of recycled objects.

Mixed Tape Table

These squatty tables are a way for people to “Gather round the coffee table” by encouraging conviviality and light conversations over coffee or tea or just a great board/sports game with the people we love – like this game table found Quirky coffee Tables.

Coffee tables

So, why do we use coffee tables?  It’s simple, people love coffee tables.  These welcoming tables help us be ourselves, and help us show who we are through our coffee tables – like this beauty of iron and wood made by Hello I Live Here.

Rustic DIY Coffee Table

Heck, when we can’t find just the right coffee tables, many of us take on the task of refinishing tables from era’s past by painting, staining, and decorative finishes, or building coffee tables from recycled goods which enhance these wonderful little coffee tables lines that hold the daily stuff that gets us through life.  This one table can help hold our coffee or tea cups, books, magazines, and our small treasures we want our guests to swoon over like this claw foot done with Annie Sloan paint and wax treatments.

Coffee Tables

So, whether you love them or hate them, use them or replace them with an ottoman or other low feature, there is always something in front of our sofa that represents this beloved piece of furniture.  Here’s to the coffee tables of the world – without you, we would all be holding our own drinks or have no place for our feet – like this $3 coffee table frame turned bench!

Tell us, what is your coffee table style and how do you use your table?

Until tomorrows post!  Gather around your coffee table and enjoy that space!

Radiant Orchid Pantone

Radiant Orchard color of the year

Radiant Orchid Pantone – Embrace it!

Have you embraced the 2014 color of the year, Radiant Orchid Pantone at Lowe’s?  Even if you do not care for Radiant Orchid Pantone, you have to admit, the color is totally captivating.  Its Magical powers draw you to want to add this color somewhere in your decor themes.  This one enchanting color, screams for its users to be original through their own creativity.  I admit, at first,  I was not too crazy about Radiant Orchid Pantone, then it just took hold and we at Hello I Live Here had to find some way to show case this bold, mystic color everyone was gloating about.

Radiant Orchid Pantone

When you view Radiant Orchid Pantone it truly gives you a smile, as you admit to yourself this color is perfect harmony.  Its such a happy color it encourages, inspires, and builds confidence in any piece that wears it, clothing, decor or furniture.  Radiant Orchid Pantone is like that touch you get from a good pair of shoes that helps your best outfit stand out and be at its best.  This one little color mix of fuchsia, purple, and pink undertones expose a rosy glow like your grandmothers cheeks.

Radiant Orchid Pantone

It took us a while to find it, but today, Hello I Live Here used Pantone’s color of the year, Radiant Orchid, on that prefect piece.  This little vintage end table has masculine lines, and wears Radiant Orchid Pantone as if it was made just for modern furniture.  This lovely color looks good on any skin tone and furniture. I can say this truthfully, because my fingers were full of the color earlier 🙂 and it made me feel like my pale winter skin tones were bright and lively.  If this one color can make me feel this alive, I can only imagine the power it will truly possess when it catches on.

Radiant Orchid Pantone

After using this lively color of hope and joy, it is clear to say, Leatrice Eiseman’s wild choice may actually be a hit in the decor world as well as fashion.  If you have not used Radiant Orchid by Pantone yet, embrace it!  Find that one piece of furniture that can wear this color like you would wear that great pair of shoes, and watch that decor piece come to life with every brush stoke.  You will be happy you gave it a try – we were 😉 .  And PS, this little piece has everyone who sees it in my workshop swooning, and wanting to purchase this awesome little table.  We also came up with an antiquing technique that we feel will be wonderful for this color, and still keep its message alive.  Until we complete our next post of Radiant Orchid painted pieces, happy color of the year everyone!  Here’s to new, brighter beginnings starting with this wonderful little can of color, Radiant Orchid.

Post you some table progress tomorrow!

DIY Decorating Ripple Effect

DIY Decorating Ripple Effect

Do you know what the DIY ripple effect is?  It’s what one DIY project can bring on when you start redecorating just one room in your home.  You all know what I am talking about – you start making over one room, and that room connects to another, so you have to make over that room, and before you know it –BAM! DIY DECORATING RIPPLE EFFECT – the whole house has been redecorated due to one room being changed.

Well, that’s what’s happening right now in our little villa.  It all started when I had to build in the laundry room.  You remember the wire shelving that nearly impaled me when it came off the wall (if you missed the story, click the link here and read up).  This one tiny room started the whole darn thing.  It moved from the laundry room to putting in a book case in a rather bland stairwell (post click here), and then moved to minor changes in the guest bath with a new towel rack built from two old shutters (click here for post), and has sailed right over to the master bathroom make over.

DIY DECORATING RIPPLE EFFECT

Yep, it was only going to be a little board and batten (featured on Bob Vila), and then moved to a little master bathroom storage (click here for post), with a vanity make over (click post here), and we are still not done, because now I need to add just a little tile, and do something with that plan white shower, and builder grade mirror.  Oh, don’t forget now I need to make a storage system for under the sinks!

DIY DECORATING RIPPLE EFFECT

Well, it hasn’t stopped there – Because I painted the wonderful Valspar “Shaken not Stirred” color and James bond up that room, it was an awful effect when you looked from the master bedroom into the now beautiful master bathroom.  What was a girl to do other than, you got it…do a small make over on the master bedroom!  After all it all connects doesn’t it? Who wants to lay there looking at what did not get done! 😉

DIY DECORATING RIPPLE EFFECTSo now, I am finishing the master bath, and by all means jumped the ladder right into the master bedroom and started changing the paint color to HGTV paint color colonel grey all why the hubby is murmuring behind me those little words…oh no, the DIY DECORATING RIPPLE EFFECT, its a sickness!  The curse of many home owners for centuries – we love the ripple effect, them … no so much!

DIY DECORATING RIPPLE EFFECT

Well, we all know it’s not going to stop there because sitting here writing this post, I can now see the fancy new paint color looming out the door of the master bedroom to the living area – I just can’t turn my eyes from that problem…so, once the bedroom is completed, what do you think will happen?  The Tidal wave of THE DIY DECORATING RIPPLE EFFECT will start rolling right on out that door and into this room like a wave on a shore.  Let’s just hope hubby’s not home when I start remodeling those rooms.  After all, every man needs some surprise in his life!

Overall, it’s been a great start over the last six months building our DIY blog, Hello I Live Here, so, here’s to THE DIY DECORATING RIPPLE EFFECT, without it The Home Depot and Lowe’s would be two very sad places, and Hello I Live Here would have nothing to share with you – win win in my book!! 😉

Tell us about your ripple effect by leave us a comment below, after all you can’t leave a girl out here in ripple effect world alone!  Happy Friday and thanks for stopping by everyone.

Linda 🙂
